Not that anyone really wants a dumb president (George W. Bush's backers defended his intelligence), but there is probably a consensus that being smart is not by itself enough qualification to be president. It must be combined with other virtues -- character, common sense, leadership, and, a new buzzword, empathy, for starters.

Jimmy Carter, for instance, is clearly intelligent. He studied nuclear physics and trained to captain a nuclear submarine. He gave a vigorous Oval Office speech to declare America's energy independence, with an ambitious plan to freeze oil imports, which he could never get implemented.

Bill Clinton, who went from a small Arkansas town to our best universities and a Rhodes scholarship, is brilliant. But his intelligence is also harnessed to some formidable political talents that not even some deep character flaws can impede.

To debate whether Barack Obama is "too smart" to be president is probably as silly as debating whether he is "black enough" to win the support of African American voters. So the question is really whether he has the other qualities to go along with his intelligence to make him an effective leader.

Obama's handling of the Gulf oil spill has intensified earlier criticism about his being aloof, professorial in his approach, and lacking in empathy. He has been compared unfavorably to Bill Clinton, who, in Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell's colorful comment, would have been down at the Gulf the day after the rig accident, donning a wetsuit to inspect the damage himself.

Clinton himself is amused that people who gave him such a hard time when he was in office now paint him as a "paragon" of empathy compared to Obama. In a session with Wolf Blitzer at a news forum in Cape Town during the World Cup tournament, Clinton said he thought Obama was getting a "bum rap" on the empathy issue.
